Bark of Arjuna tree is very good natural source of calcium and has been found to be rich in Co-enzyme Q-10 which is highly prescribed in cardiology departments now a days to prevent heart problems. High amounts of Co-enzyme Q-10 prevents incident of heart attacks. It also has a tonic effect in cases of cirrhosis of the liver. It induces a drug-dependent decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. It has been reported to possess protective cardiovascular and hypolipidemic properties. Methica (Trigonella foenumgraecum) 



 As per modern science,
Methika  seeds contain minerals ,which include calcium, phosphorous ,iron, sodium and potassium. so useful in osteoporotic changes in menopause .It is nervine tonic  in neuralgic pain.

Types of calcium deficiency

There are two types of calcium deficiency:
·         Dietary calcium deficiency is a condition in which there is an inadequate calcium intake, which can lead to depleted calcium stores in the bones, thinning and weakening of the bones, and osteporosis,moreover in menapousal condition in women.
·         Hypocalcemia is a low level of calcium in the blood. It can occur from taking medications, such as diuretics; medical treatments; or disease processes, such as renal failure or hypoparathyroidism.
An insufficient amount of calcium in your diet will generally not cause hypocalcemia. This is because normal amounts of calcium in the blood are so critical to many vital body functions of the nerves, muscles, brain and heart, that your body will pull calcium from the bones as needed to maintain normal blood calcium levels. This enables important processes in the body to continue. However, ongoing dietary calcium deficiency can eventually lead to thinning of the bones and  osteoporosis because calcium stores in the bones are not replaced as they are used by the body.
Untreated calcium deficiency can lead to serious complications, such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythemia(An arrhythmia is a disorder of the  pulse or heart rhythm, such as beating too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.) Seek regular medical care and follow your treatment plan to reduce the risk of serious complications from calcium deficiency.

What factors determine bone strength?
Bone mass (bone density) is determined by the amount of bone present in the skeletal structure. Generally, the higher the bone density, the stronger the bones. Bone density is greatly influenced by genetic factors, which in turn are sometimes modified by environmental factors and medications. For example, men have a higher bone density than women, and African Americans have a higher bone density than Caucasian or Asian Americans.
Estrogen is important in maintaining bone density in women. When estrogen levels drop after menopause, loss of bone density accelerates. During the first five to 10 years after menopause, women can suffer up to 2%-4% loss of bone density per year! This can result in the loss of up to 25%-30% of their bone density during that time period. The accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women, referred to as postmenopausal osteoporosis
Normally, bone density accumulates during childhood and reaches a peak by around age 25. Bone density then is maintained for about 10 years. After age 35, both men and women will normally lose 0.3%-0.5% of their bone density per year as part of the aging process.

Osteoporosis is often considered to be a condition that frail elderly women develop. However, the damage from osteoporosis begins much earlier in life. Because peak bone density is reached at approximately 25 years of age, it is important to build strong bones by that age, so that the bones will remain strong later in life. Adequate calcium intake is an essential part of building strong bone.
 One in two women and one in eight men are predicted to have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
Osteoporosis in the vertebrae can cause serious problems for women. A fracture in this area occurs from day-to-day activities like climbing stairs, lifting objects, or bending forward. Signs of osteoporosis:

 



  • Sloping shoulders
  • Curve in the back
  • Height loss
  • Back pain After age 35,
Both men and women will normally lose 0.3%-0.5% of their bone density per year as part of the ageing process. Estrogen, a hormone in women is important in maintaining bone density. When estrogen levels drop after menopause, loss of bone density accelerates.

During the first five to 10 years after menopause, women can suffer up to 2%-4% loss of bone density per year! This can result in the loss of up to 25%-30% of their bone density during that time. Accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women. Hormone replacement therapy post-menopause prevents this loss, but is of no major help once the window period of six years post-menopause is over.

Calcium is so important

Why is Calcium so important? Calcium is needed for good teeth and strong bones and for the proper function of nerves, muscles, kidneys, and the heart. Not having enough calcium in the diet is one of many factors associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, a disease that speeds up the process of the natural loss of calcium in the bones. This causes the bones to become weak and fragile, leading to loss of height, curved spines, and bone fractures, especially in women. In recent years, the recommended amount of calcium has been increased from 800 mg to 1000 to 1200 mg per day. Dairy products are the most common source of calcium for people in western industrialized countries. But, as you know, most of the dairy products most commonly eaten are very high in saturated fat and cholesterol, as well as calories! This is not a good trade-off - increasing your risk of heart disease and weight gain by eating dairy products high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories in order to decrease your risk or osteoporosis by getting the calcium they contain! keep your bones healthy the remainder of your life by doing a few simple things: • Eat enough calcium from low fat sources, or supplement • Strengthen your bones through regular exercise • Avoid unhealthy, low calorie diet plans • If you are a post-menopausal woman, discuss estrogen replacement with your doctor • Avoid smoking, and if you do smoke, quit! People who constantly diet throughout their lives are at greater risk for osteoporosis because they often do not get enough calcium (or other nutrients) because of low calorie intake. So, maintaining healthy bones is another good reason to lose weight the right way: through a balanced, low fat diet plan and regular physical activity.
